Makalu Base Camp trekking leads you right beneath towering peaks of Mt. Makalu and Baruntse within remorseless fields of ice and glaciers facing tremendous views of high snow capped mountains with rare East Face of Everest known as ‘Khansung.’

The adventure keeps you amazed within its beautiful surrounding of complete wilderness covered by dense alpine forest where most of the rare vegetation and nearly extinct herbs of the world found around Barun Valley on walk to Makalu base camp.

Makalu base camp trekking begins with panoramic short flight in a small aircraft to reach you at Nepal Far East around Sanka-Sauva district in Tumlingtar town of Makalu zone.

A warm and sub-tropical country where four-wheel drive takes you at mid-hill to our starting point of the trekking, walk follows down and ups through rural and isolated farm villages to reach the last human settlement and a village of Tasi-Gaon populated by Sherpa of Makalu.

From Tashi-Gaon leaving the village for more than week duration heading into a mountainous region to reach high Kohma-la and Shipton-la pass and within dense green woodland of tall rhododendron and pine trees, where walk leaves behind towards scenic Barun Valley.

Enjoying scenic and interesting walks along with splendid views of surrounding dramatic landscapes and snow-capped peaks, and then head further north to reach final highlight and on highest spot of the adventure at Makalu base camp 4,812 m / 15,879 ft high.

At base camp with time to explore around on less ventured area facing rare and exciting view of Everest East, which is called Khansung Face in local language of Tibetan origin, views includes high peaks of Lhotse, Chamlang and Baruntse.

After a marvelous time in perfect wilderness of high mountains head back towards Arun Valley with ups and downhill towards farm villages to reach warm low areas at Tumlingtar for exciting flight to Kathmandu, with fabulous memories and experience on Makalu Base Camp Trekking.

Best Seasons

March to May with Mid September to November months best months for treks when most of the days crystal clear for views, but cold in the morning and night time as well in shades with chances of snow sometimes during autumn and winter seasons.

Where March to May will be lively when wild flowers are in full bloom with sunny days with cloudy late afternoon sometimes.

October to November autumn months with clear fine day for views and walks, however will be much cold in the morning and night time as well in shade, not including wind chill factor, chances of snow on route walks above 2,500 m higher, around autumn / fall day light is shorter but great times for Makalu base camp trekking.


Day 1Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel

On arrival at Kathmandu international airport received by Life and Journey staff/guide greets you with a warm welcome and then transfer into the heart of Kathmandu city to your respective hotels.

With time to get refreshed join in for group briefing regarding treks with other useful information as well with do’s and don’ts, includes welcome group dinner in a nice authentic restaurant with cultural program.

Day 2In Kathmandu options for sightseeing tour and trek preparation

Free day in Kathmandu for leisure activities as well for options for sightseeing tour around the city places of Interest, as Kathmandu and its close other cities steep with World Heritage Sites, afternoon preparation for Makalu base camp trek.

Day 3Fly to Tumlingtar 480 m and drive to Num village 1,480 m with 45 mins air flight and 4 hrs drives for overnight stop.

Starting Makalu base camp trekking with an exciting flight from Kathmandu to reach around Nepal Far East region at Sanka-Sauva district within Makalu zone in Tumlingtar town, during air journey enjoy views of Himalayan peaks includes Everest and Makalu as far to Kanchenjunga towards east.
After a scenic flight land at Tumlingtar airstrip around low warmer area of sub-tropical temperatures, from Tumlingtar a jeep drive takes you to cooler hills at Num village for overnight, as drive leads above Arun valley past Khandbari town to reach at hill village of Num with views of Makalu and Baruntse peaks.

Day 4Trek to Seduwa 1,493 m - 05 hrs.

First day starts with long descend for an hour to cross over a bridge above Arun River, and then uphill to Seduwa village, walking past Runmura a small farm village with gradual climb to Seduwa village for overnight stop and camp.

Day 5Trek to Tashi-Gaon 2,100 m- 04 hrs.

From Seduwa farm village, a short day walk day morning walk leads you winding gradual path to reach at Tashi-Gaon a moderate size farm village populated by Sherpa community.
This is the last village on the way to Makalu base camp, where walk leads around farm area to reach Tashi-Gaon for lunch and overnight camp, here with time to explore the village of great interest around to witness Sherpa Buddhist culture and age-old traditional life.

Day 6Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500 m / 11,482 ft - 06 hrs.

With pleasant time at Tashi Gaon around its last farm settlement for a week, morning walk leads to gradual path within dense forest of rhododendron, oaks and pines trees past several cattle herder’s shelters and shades.
Walking for few hours on good moderate trail where afternoon walk leads to a climb for few hours to reach on top Kongma ridge, where tall trees fades to small rhododendron and juniper bushes.
Overnight camp is set overlooking views of world third high Mt. Kanchenjunga with Mt. Makalu and adjoining peaks.

Day 7 Trek to Mumbuk 3,400 m - 06 hrs.

From Kongma walk leads to complete wilderness following a ridge with few ups and down to reach at glacial ponds of Thulo Pokhari (large) with Sano Pokhari(small), and then cross over Tutu-la and Shipton la above 4, 453 m high passes, with downhill heading back into dense forest to our overnight camp in the midst of tree lines at place called Mumbuk.

Day 8Trek to Nehe Kharka 3,750 m - 06 hrs.

Morning walks heads down toward scenic Barun valley, a scenic place as well famous for rare species of vegetation- plants that’s almost lost in this part of the world, where medicinal herbs and mountain animals are found around.
On reaching Barun valley, walk leads to gradual up with views of peaks on both sides of the valley and then encountering several Yak herder shelters and a small Buddhist Gompa (monastery), after a nice good walk reaching to our overnight camp at Nehe Kharka with scenic Barun valley.

Day 9Trek to Sherson 4,410 m - 05 hrs.

From Barun valley trek to Langmale Kharka and continue to walk to Sherson situated at the end of Barun valley close to Makalu base camp, as walk lead with slow climb crossing streams facing close views of Mt. Makalu and Baruntse peaks, after a good walk of the day reaching at Sherson for an overnight stop.

Day 10Trek to Makalu Base Camp 4,870 m/ 15,978 ft - 04 hrs.

After Sherson camp with last smaller vegetation of bush and alpine shrubs as walk leads to our major highlight at Makalu Base Camp, route leads over moraine and ice within rocky areas to reach at Makalu base camp, located close to a glacial icy pond next to Baruntse Himal.
Our overnight stops beneath towering South Face of Mt. Makalu, with time to explore and enjoy views of surrounding high peaks.

Day 11At Makalu Base Camp to explore around.

Rest day at Makalu base camp within great views of Mt. Makalu, Baruntse Himal and peak IV, options for hike for more scenic panorama where you can see Mt. Everest and its rare East Face known as Kangshung with Mt. Lhotse.

Day 12Trek to Yangre Kharka 3,645 m- 06 hrs.

From Makalu base camp retrace the walk back towards lower Barun valley to reach at Yangle Kharka for overnight stop enclosed within high rocky cliffs, offering views of waterfalls.

Day 13Trek to Mumbuk 3,400 m - 06 hrs.

After a great wonderful time within scenic Barun valley, walk leads towards the end of Barun valley and then climb back into forest at Mumbuk for overnight camp.

Day 14Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500 m - 06 hrs.

Morning back on the same scenic trail to Kongma ridge starts with climb for an hour into forest areas to reach a ridge after leaving tree lines, as walk leads past the glacial ponds and over Tutu la and Shipton la to Kongma hill for overnight stop.

Day 15Trek to Tashi-Gaon 2,100 m- 05 hrs.

Ending our high altitude walk as morning route leads with long downhill into forest of tall tree lines to reach at Tashi Gaon, with time in the afternoon for walks around Nawa or Narbu gaon village to explore nice farm village.

Day 16Trek to Seduwa 1,493 m - 04 hrs.

Morning walk leads as route follows to Seduwa village, a pleasant morning walk taking time to observe local village farm life as our day ends at Seduwa for overnight stop.

Day 17Trek to Num 1,500 m/4,921 ft- 04/5 hrs.

From here last day walk of the adventure follows long descend on steep path to reach Arun River, after crossing over a bridge where last steep climb takes you to Num village for last overnight around high hills of Makalu Himalaya.

Day 18Drive back to Tumlingtar- 04 hrs.

Morning our adventure walks completes taking an exciting drive to reach Tumlingtar heading past farm land and Khandbari town finally drive ends at Tumlingtar with time to stroll around this interesting town, observe local culture and traditional life of eastern Nepal.

Day 19From Tumlingtar fly back to Kathmandu.

Morning after breakfast and as per flight time for Kathmandu transfer to Tumlingtar airport, where scenic and exciting flight brings you back at city life of Kathmandu, where our adventure Makalu Base Camp trekking completes.

Day 20In Kathmandu free day for individual activities.

We reserve this day as contingency or spare day in case of bad and unfavorable weather, which can occur sometimes as Himalayan weather are unpredictable, if all goes well according to our itinerary days one can have a leisure day or book for another sightseeing tour of Kathmandu-Patan and Bhaktapur.

Day 21International Departure homeward bound or respective countries
