Introduction

Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasrover Journey a fascinating adventure that leads you to remote and wildest country of Tibet Far South West, within world highest as well the largest plateau facing exceptional scenery of dry and barren landscapes with snow capped mountains.

 Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasrover regarded holiest of all spots for four major religions Hindu-Buddhist-Jain and to Bon sect of pre Buddhism, for Hindu abode of Lord Shiva the mighty gods of three main ones Brahma-Vishnu and Mahesh.

Where Jain respects the mountain as Astha-Padha founder of their religious sects as for Buddhist a place of Khang-Rinpoche the holy saint as well for Bon sect, a great of mountain of its own pride where pilgrims from India and Tibet visits this holy place for Kora, Parikrama or circuit of Mt. Kailash 52 km (32miles).

Mt. Kailash stands at the height of 6,714m and 22,028 ft with sacred Lake Manasrover, where Hindu believes created from the mind of holy-spirit in Hindu as ‘Manas’.

Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasrover starts from Kathmandu heading north-west with drive towards Nepal and Tibet frontier town at Kyirong, where transport replaces with Tibetan guides and drivers to take care of you guiding throughout the trip within Tibet.

Overland journey takes you to high and windswept country within vast Tibetan plateau to reach first at sacred Lake Manasrover a huge lake Approx: 60 k.m / 70 k.m in length and width.

Enjoy times at Lake Manasrover with close views of Mt. Kailash and Gurla-Mandata peaks, and then heading to Darchen a famous town where pilgrimage walks around Kailash starts and ends.

Walk leads from West of Mt. Kailash to reach Northern side at Dhirapuk and on top Dorma-la a holy spot and the highest point of the walk festooned with thousands of Buddhist prayer flags and offering.

From the top heading down at Lamchu valley to Zutulphuk for last overnight stop and then ending the holy kora, parikrama and circuit where drive leads back to Kyirong for final stop within Tibetan, then head towards Kathmandu after a great marvelous adventure and memorable experience on Mt. Kailash and holy Lake Manasrover.

Best Seasons

April to October months best seasons to visit Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasrover including monsoon times of June to mid September, as most of whole Tibet falls within Rain-Shadow area.

Where monsoon wet clouds obstructed and blocked by southern massive Himalayan mountain range, April to June dry and arid with clear blue sky quite windy during day time for travel and walks.

Morning to mid afternoon, days are clear for views of landscapes and snow-capped mountains with green vegetation around villages yielding wheat, buck-wheat and barley fields lively during spring and summer times around South West Tibet.

June to mid September cloudy with traces of rain due to the dryness and the nature of windswept country, where moisture and precipitation will be higher which makes travel in high altitude much better also helps and supports against high altitude sickness.

September to October post monsoon greener valley for enjoyable walks and to visit Tibet with crystal clear sky facing views of dramatic landscapes with Mountains, cold in the morning and night as well places in shades away from sunlight.

Sunshine can be bright with UV ray (Ultra Violet) due to high elevation and thin air where travelers need strong protection from the strong sunlight during mid day.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel

On arrival at Kathmandu international airport received by Life and Journey staff / guide greets you with warm welcome and then transfer into heart of Kathmandu city to your respective hotels.
With time to get refreshed join in for group briefing regarding Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasrover journey with other useful information as well with do’s and don’ts, includes welcome group dinner in a nice authentic restaurants with cultural program.

Day 2In Kathmandu options for sightseeing tour and trek preparation

Free day in Kathmandu for leisure activities as well for options for sightseeing tour around the city places of Interest, as Kathmandu and its close other cities steep with World Heritage Sites, afternoon preparation for Kailash Journey.

Day 3Drive to Syabrubesi village 1,460 m - 06 hrs.

Morning an early start with scenic and interesting drive beyond north of Kathmandu valley, where journey leads on winding road past many farm villages and towns within warm areas of Trisuli and Nuwakot district.
As drive continues heading uphill within cooler country to reach at Dhunche, headquarter town of Rasuwa district within Langtang Himal, also the start of Langtang National Park, from here downhill to our overnight stop at Syabrubesi within Tamang tribe village.

Day 4Drive to Kyirong 3,950 m camp or local Guesthouse.

From Syabrubesi morning drive leads on newly constructed road that links Nepal / Tibet border at Rasuwa Gadhi at 1,800m which is 15 km distance of an hour drive from Syabrubesi, on reaching Nepa-Tibet frontier received by our Tibetan guide and drivers, after completing immigration & custom formalities on the both sides of Nepal / Tibet at Rasuwa Gadhi, drive leads further to Kyirong county with first overnight stop in Tibet with accommodation at local guest-house or with camping facilities.

Day 5In Kyirong rest day for acclimatization.

An important and necessary rest day for acclimatization, before heading higher areas of dry and high Tibetan terrain, as Kyirong a perfect spot for rest with an altitude of 3,950 m as next day adventure drive leads at above 4,500 meters and much higher over passes.
At Kyirong relax and enjoy views of Ganesh and Langtang Himal peaks towards south that borders Nepal and Tibet.

Day 6Drive to Saga 4,400m - 05 hrs.

After stop at Kyirong morning continue drive on world highest and largest Tibetan plateau into inner Tibet wild windswept high and dry landscapes, as the drive joins on the road of Nylam / Zhangmu near Paigu-Tsho, a huge salt lake.
From here heading over a small pass to reach Brahmaputra River or Yalung Tsangpo after crossing the river on a bridge reach at Saga town, a growing moderate size town located on route Mt. Kailash and Shigatse / Lhasa.

Day 7 Drive to Paryang 4,550 m - 06 hrs.

From Saga few hours’ drive over a pass then descending to long stretch of Tibetan plains, with great views of distant peaks. Drive passes few villages and nomads / yak herders’ camps and then reaching a windswept village at Paryang.
Paryang located 4,550 m, a small town with almost 15-20 houses serving as Guest houses and Lodge, where facilities are very simple and basic.

Day 8Drive to west side of Manasrover at Chu-Gompa 4,545 m - 06 hrs.

After Paryang morning drive towards Tibet’s dry windswept landscape on world’s highest and largest plateau, driving with views of Mt. Gurla Mandhata at 7,728 meters high, and the over Maium-La Pass 5,050 m.
Drive then leads to western rim of holy Mt. Kailash near Chu Gompa (monastery) located on a ridge inside overhanging cave.
Overnight stop in local guesthouse / lodge (depending upon the season for Indian and Tibetan pilgrims)

Day 9Morning at Manasrover Lake afternoon drive to Darchen 4,620 m time to visit its busy markets.

Morning free at holy Lake Manasrover located in Western Tibet between Mt. Kailash 6,714 meters and Gurla Mandhata Mountain Range stands at 7,694 meters. Where Lake Manasrover floats beneath the shadow of holy Mt. Kailash as this lake forms the mind of God, as the name Manas.
Here interested pilgrims can perform puja rites with dips in this sacred lake within shallow area by the shore.
In Hindu, Buddhist and Jain religion, the holiest lake of Asia; best time to go around Lake Manasrover is in late autumn and early spring when the streams and rivers are low.
Possible walk near the shoreline, an optional drive around Manasrover Lake can be done on request which takes about four hours.
With time here after performing puja an interesting short hike to Chu Gompa located on a shelf of a over-hanging cliff cave, adorned with Buddhism arts and ancient idols of Lord Buddha and other high Gurus.
Afternoon a short drive takes you at the centre and main town of Kailash in Darchen with many shops-stores and lodges with Guest-House, an interesting market to visit around and observe Tibetan traditional life and culture, during auspicious time this place flooded with Tibetan and Indian pilgrims for Kora, parikrama or holy circuit walks.

Day 10Drive past Darchen to Tarboche 4,680 m and walk to Dhirapuk 4,970 m. 5 hrs overnight in lodge or with camping.

After Darchen with time at sacred Lake Manasrover, morning starts with a short drive on Barkha valley beyond Darchen town to reach Tarboche, one of the holy spot of the region with excellent views of Mt. Kailash West Face from here our holy walk begins leading north on a wide terrain towards Shershong, then with gradual climb of nice walk reaching to our overnight stop at Dhiraphuk Gompa, with magnificent views of holy Mt. Kailash North Face.

Day 11Trek to Zutul-Puk 4,760 m and over high Dorma-la pass - 6 hrs.

From Dhiraphuk and highest spot for overnight stops, morning walk continues heading uphill trail onto moraine of more than two hours, then with steep climb to reach on top Dormo-la pass at above 5,630m /18,525ft.
A holy spot closest views of Mt. Kailash North Face and the highest point of this adventurous pilgrimage, a big boulder represent goddess Dolma or Dromo (Tara) festooned with thousands of prayer flags and offering by both Hindu’s and Buddhist pilgrims.
This holy spot a physical and spiritual high point on pilgrimage, parikrama or Kora, after a nice break here walk leads to a long descend towards Lamchu wide valley a flat area, on reaching at the bottom of Dormo -la pass, a pleasant walk reaches you at a small Zutul-Puk Gompa for overnight stop, either in lodge or in tented camp.
Zuthul means cave in Tibetan, this place named after a holy cave in which poet, and saint Milereppa meditate in early 11th century, his footprints can be seen on the cave roof top.

Day 12End Parikrama and walk then drive to Dzongba 4,350 m - 06 hrs.

Last day of holy walk around Mt. Kailash, morning walk on nice gradual trail for few hours to reach a narrow valley and a gorge of Karnali River, from here walk heads west to near Darchen to end our holy walk, from here taking a drive past Mayum-la pass and the continue drive to reach at windswept town to Dzongba town for overnight stop.

Day 13Drive back to Kyirong 2,890 m via Saga - 06 hrs.

Morning drive leads close to snow capped mountains that border Nepal and Tibet, a great scenic drive to reach Saga town, after a refreshing stop continue drive to Kyirong frontier town, journey leads past great Tibetan dry plateau taking a newly opened route of five hours overland drive to reach the border town of Tibet-China and Nepal at Kyirong for last overnight stop in Tibet.

Day 14Drive to Dhunche town 1,900 m - 05 hrs.

Last time in Tibet offering farewell to Tibetan guide and drivers, morning depart from Tibet taking a short drive to border post of Nepal and Tibet / China at Rasuwa-Gadhi.
After completing visa and custom formalities then enter into Nepal border at Rasuwa Gadhi the cross Nepal where drive leads on rough dirt road for a while to reach Syabrubesi village, after a short refreshing break journey continues on winding uphill to reach at Dhunche town for overnight stop.

Day 15Drive back to Kathmandu from Dhunche town- 06 hrs.

Morning after breakfast board in a bus or similar vehicle as per group size then drive from Dunche on winding downhill to reach warmer areas of Nuwakot and then descend on good road to reach back to your hotel in Kathmandu, after a mesmerizing time and adventure on Kailash and Manasrover Journey and Yatra.

Day 16At leisure in Kathmandu for independent activities.
